On the Economics of Independent Filmmaking
A note on third-party funding and professional travel
It is common knowledge within the independent film industry that festival attendance frequently depends on external support. What is less commonly documented is when that support is systematic, undisclosed, and entirely one-directional.
The following is a matter of financial record:
Attendance at the Cannes Film Festival (2018-19) including travel and accommodation was funded entirely by a third-party individual. No contribution, partial or whole, was made by the attendee toward these costs.
A visit to the United Kingdom during the same period, including travel and accommodation, was similarly funded in full by the same third-party individual.
These trips were presented publicly as markers of professional achievement and international recognition. The financial reality behind them was neither disclosed nor acknowledged.
The third-party individual retains full documentation of these transactions including booking confirmations and payment records.
